CicLAvia October 18, 2015: Street Closures in LA

CicLAvia, June 23, 2013

Biking, Skateboarding, Walking in LA

Imagine parts of LA's otherwise busy roadways with no cars at all for one whole day -- nothing motorized. Yes, there will be no cars parked on these street either.

Then imagine lots and lots of happy people just standing around on these open streets, milling around, playing, walking on them, roller skating, roller blading, skateboarding, bicycling, and riding on wheelchairs.

There will be shows, street food and all other fun stuff. Yes this does happen and it is called CicLAvia.

CicLAvia

CicLAvia is a grassroots initiative which started in 2008. It got birthed from the "ciclovia" events in Colombia. "Ciclovia" is literally bikepaths and since 1974, ciclovia has made certain street of Bogota and other municipalities closed off to vehicles of any kind.

Los Angeles

But because the street closures are in LA, then I guess it is only fitting that the events there are named cicLAvia. Now the very first CicLAvia event was held on October 10, 2010. And what was once a yearly event has grown.to two, three, four (and possibly) more times a year.

October 18, 2015

CicLAvias are held on a Sunday and the one on October 18 is nicknamed "Heart of LA". It will be the 15th CicLAvia since 2010. And like the previous ones, certain streets will be closed to vehicular traffic (at least for a few hours). And any vehicle who tries to enter these closed out roads, will be stopped and the driver, most possibly ticketed. Anybody who will need to be out and about in LA should be forewarned.
