The State of the Union & the State of the Nation

The State of the Union versus the State of the Nation

Long lines to get a Powerball Ticket

January 12, 2016, President Barack Obama gave his last State of the Union address. But it seems like many of the common American people couldn't care less. Because most of them were busy wondering what numbers to pick, where to get the cash, where to go, how to get there and they were actually standing in line and waiting to buy their magic power ball tickets.

And who can blame them, the very next day, the biggest lottery win ever will be up for grabs and the winner would have been the first lottery billionaire in US history.

That is a real once in a lifetime chance -- yes even if it was only a one in a 300 million chance in actually hitting it.

News of the Day

All the news networks were busy covering the long lines of people who were trying their luck in winning the big money.

People were lining up, people were doing office pools, people were hitting all the lucky stores, doing all their pre-buying rituals to purchase their tickets, people were driving across town or across state lines even. People were using their rent money or their savings, so you name it, it was probably done.

1.6 Billion Dollars

And guess what, one "lucky" person from the Los Angeles area, actually got all the numbers right (4, 8, 19, 27, 34 and 10) and won the big jackpot.

There were actually two other people who got the same numbers down, one in Florida and one in Tennessee. What were the odds of that happening?

So now, the question is...

What Are You Going To Do With All That Money?

So there you go -- that's the state of the nation for you.

What can I say, the US, is still football nation. SOTU what?

Thoughts On the State of the Union Address 2015

January 20, 2015

Video: President's Obama's State of the Union Address 2015

It’s pretty hard not to like President Obama as I am listening to him speak in front of a U.S. Congress now dominated by Republicans.

In fact, he probably turned out what could be his best State of the Union address to date. For those who are counting, this was his sixth address and as he reiterated, he has no more campaigns to run. We know that’s true but I live in Los Angeles and it just feels like he’s always in town for his Hollywood “fundraiser” campaigns. It’s pretty much hard not to notice when he or the First Lady are in town for one of their sojourns as the resulting driving conditions are even more horrendous than normal. And “normal” is already unbearable.

Personally I do not agree with some of President Obama’s positions or his policies, he does have that tendency to please certain people or cater to certain groups of people and many of his critics do swear that he’s a pretty good liar. And because of these I cannot really say that I like him (or his administration) but yes it’s pretty hard not to admire him when to me he seems to have an uncanny knack for saying the right words at the right time. Not that he hasn’t put his foot inside his mouth much more than acceptable, but when it counts, he does seem to be a great writer or have a great ghost writer and he does have an amazing way of delivering his speeches charmingly, effortlessly and with just the proper amount of wit and humor making you to lean on “like” than “dislike”.

Pause for a standing ovation anyone?

I agree with Mr. President that “we” are the United States of America.

Unfortunately and obviously we are made up of different shapes, sizes, colors, backgrounds, politics, opinions, passions, beliefs and convictions. And so some people will always pull one way while another the other way or one group will always rub another group the wrong way. It’s just a fact of living in a volatile melting pot with a long history of animosity.

But he is right, it is 15 years into the year 2000 and indeed, it is time to try to come together to make America great again. Many other nations have passed and are passing us by. It’s time to have a different kind of politics -- if that “dream” is ever possible.

But dream we must.

So God bless our nation’s leaders. And God bless America.
