50 Years in Torrance
In 1967, the Japanese car maker chose to build their North American headquarters in Torrance because it is right smack in the middle of LAX and the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.
Torrance and the South bay is also home to many Japanese Americans who speak Japanese and are familiar with the Japanese culture.
California to Texas
Back in 2014, construction of a new headquarters in Plano, Texas began and the initial move from Torrance to Plano also started. In the summer of 2017, the final move out from Torrance would be complete -- along with several thousands of jobs.
Incidentally Nissan, another Japanese car maker moved its U.S. Headquarters from next door Gardena to Tennessee in 2006.
Honda, which also used to be housed in Gardena, before moving to Torrance is still headquartered there, but for how long, we shall see.
